Student Film Festival in Valleys

The red carpet will be rolled out at the University of Glamorgan next month when the stars of the Welsh film industry descend on its Treforest campus during a series of film festival events, organised entirely by students.

Over forty students have come together from various backgrounds and academic disciplines, to produce Wales’ first contemporary film festival run by students.

The event will take a retrospective look at the Welsh Film Industry and celebrate the National Cinema of Wales and will include open discussions with some of Wales’ top directors, producers, writers, industry executives and scholars from the University.

During the Festival there will be a range of free events that are open to members of the general public as well as students:

The festival which spans four consecutive weeks kicks-off with the Gala Opening on Thursday March 2nd at 5.30pm when there will be an opportunity to meet film Director Marc Evans (House of America) and Grahame Davies (Executive Producer for New Media at BBC Wales). There will be a presentation about Wales on Air/BBC Wales Cymru?r Byd and a chance to see clips from films over the last 80 years.
On Thursday March 9th meet Director Tim Lyn. There will be a screening of his film, ‘Eldra’, followed by a question and answer session. They will be discussing Welsh Identity in film. This event is sponsored by the Department of Arts and Media.

On Thursday March 16th, Boyd Clack writer of High Hopes and Satellite City will be discussing his work, with Darrell Perrins from Film Studies and Dr Brett Mills. This event is sponsored by Welsh Language Studies.

Finally the Gala Closing Session on Thursday March 23rd we will be showing short clips from the film Joni Jones and screen in its entirety ‘Coming Up Roses’, with Director, Stephen Bayly, Producer Linda James, Screenwriter Ruth Carter and Editor Sara Jolly. This event is sponsored by The Film Academy.

All events are free and run from 5.30pm -9pm. Events will be held at the University of Glamorgan’s Business Centre on the Treforest campus.
