Keir Hardie Memorial unveiled in Aberdare

Keir Hardie memorial Ann ClwydA memorial to Labour Party founder James Keir Hardie has been unveiled in Aberdare.

The bronze bust was unveiled by Ann Clwyd MP for Cynon Valley and current Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

The special event held at Rock Grounds in Aberdare marks the centenary year of the founding of the modern Labour Party.

In 1900 Keir Hardie was elected to the dual constituency of Aberdare and Merthyr, which he represented until his death in 1915.

Ann Clwyd said : “I am enormously proud both to be the MP for the constituency Keir Hardie represented and to be the current chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party.

“It is important that we have a lasting reminder of the contribution that Keir Hardie made to this area and to working people throughout the country.”

Guests at the ceremony included two ministers from the Indian High Commission. The Indian Government donated the granite on which the bronze bust sits, recognising the fact that Keir Hardie was an early champion of the cause of Indian independence.
