Teenage talents to join Nos Galan

December 27, 2006

Two Cynon Valley teenagers are to play a starring role in this year’s legendary Nos Galan races, as support runners to the event’s mystery runner.

Christie Williams and Daniel Williams have been selected for the prestigious spots because of their exceptional achievements in athletics.

They will first join the Mystery Runner – whose identity will be unveiled at the New Year’s Eve races – at a ceremony at the graveside of Guto Nyth Bran, the legend who inspired Nos Galan races, in Llanwonno Church.

They will then run with the mystery runner – and the Nos Galan beacon – to Abbeyfield House to meet the residents and spread New Year’s cheer, before making their way to the race starting line.

Following the family fireworks spectacular and the presentation of prizes to children who took part in the earlier races, the support runners and mystery runners will then start the adult races in style.

Daniel, 17, is a member of Aberdare VAAC has a successful track record in high jump, winning gold, silver and bronze medals in scores of competitions across Wales, England and Scotland from 2003-2005. Daniel is coached by Steve Ryan, who is Wales’ National High Jump Event coach.

An athlete for six years, Daniel also played football for Pendydarren Boys and Girls Club from ages 12 to 16, where he was voted Sportsman of the Year for two years running.

Daniel is also a keen fan of computers, music, games machines and the television programme LOST. He supports Liverpool FC, as well as Cardiff City and Merthyr.

He has 10 GSCEs and is currently studying for A Levels, after passing AS levels in Arts, maths, computer and geography. He is hoping to study at University.

Christie, 14 (no relation of Daniel’s) has been involved in athletics for five years and held the Welsh Vest for Under 13ws, as well as the record for 150m (under-11s) and the javelin for the under 13 age group. She is also a keen hockey and golf player.

“Congratulations to Daniel and Christie for their outstanding achievements, they are an inspiration to others across the county and we hope they thoroughly enjoy the evening,” said local councillor Andrew Morgan.

“Nos Galan is going to be a fantastic night out for all the family, it is a tradition at the heart of Mountain Ash and an event that puts the town on the sporting map.

“I am looking forward to see as many people coming along to cheer along the runners, enjoy the fireworks and the entertainment. I would also like to wish everyone in the town a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.”
