Remploy support from RCT

November 17, 2007

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has stepped up its campaign to provide a brighter future for Remploy staff, following the confirmation this week of Remploy’s proposed closures.

While the authority is pleased Remploy’s Aberdare centre will remain open, it is disappointed the Treforest branch will close – despite high level appeals from senior politicians.

As Remploy’s focus remains on sustaining the branches that will remain open, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has pledged continued support to staff affected by the Treforest closure.

Cllr Eudine Hanagan, Cabinet member for Better Public Services and Transport and Procurement Officers are meeting again with representatives from Remploy Treforest.

The aim of the intervention is to work with affected staff to create business opportunities and enable them to tender for contracts to enable the future of the site.

Cllr Hanagan explained: “We are in a difficult position as we have campaigned at all levels to save the vital Remploy factories in our county.

“While we are pleased Aberdare is to remain open, this news has been darkened by the fact Treforest remains on Remploy’s list of proposed closures.

“However, we are determined to stick to the commitment we made to these staff and work with them to create business plans and open opportunities for them to continue using their skills by bidding for contracts and tenders with the assistance of our local authority procurement experts.”
