Children help Ferndale park bloom
January 3, 2008
Thousands of daffodils will bloom in a Ferndale park next spring, thanks to the efforts of local children.
Pupils and teachers from Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Llyn y Forwyn and Darran Park Primary School planted 4,000 bulbs in Darran Park with help from staff from Rhondda Cynon Taf Parks and Countryside department and local councillor Annette Davies (pictured above).
“The children had two very busy days of bulb planting and despite the grey and - at times - wet weather, a good time was had by all,” said Cllr Davies, ward member for Ferndale.
“I’m sure the pupils will be delighted to see the results of their hard work in a few months when the daffodils bloom.”
Bulb planting is part of a programme of works being undertaken in Darran Park this winter following a successful bid made by the Council’s Leisure, Parks and Countryside and Development and Regeneration sections.
A grant of £80,000 for environmental improvements has been obtained through the Heads of the Valleys initiative. Improvements being carried out include:
· Bulb planting
· Tree and shrub planting
· Resurfacing footpaths, opening links to the woodland and wider countryside
· Provision of bird and bat boxes
· Removal of silt from edge of lake
· Dry stone wall repairs
· Pruning of trees
The Heads of the Valleys initiative was launched by the Welsh Assembly Government in September 2004. The 15 year regeneration strategy has been developed in full partnership with five local authorities - Rhondda Cynon Taf, Merthyr Tydfil, Caerphilly, Blaenau Gwent and Torfaen, and other local stakeholders. The initiative is tackling the root causes of economic inactivity and other key issues in the area.
The £140million programme aims to create:
· An attractive and well-used natural, historic and built environment
· A vibrant economic landscape offering new opportunities
· A well educated, skilled and healthier population
· An appealing and coherent tourism and leisure experience
· Public confidence in a shared bright future
