Ponty Poetry
January 11, 2008
Yorkshire poet and comedian Ian McMillan and European music combine when the Ian McMillan Orchestra comes to the Muni Arts Centre, Pontypridd on Friday 8th February at 8pm with Sharp Stories.
Hailing from Barnsley, Ian McMillan has been a poet, broadcaster, commentator and programme maker since 1981 although he has been entertaining since the 70s.
From his early days as an experimental folk artist Ian now concentrates his skills on exploring the wonder of the language that is English. Ian hosts the weekly show The Verb on BBC Radio 3, a programme “dedicated to investigating spoken words around the globe”.
During 2007 he presented a series on the art of writing, Ian McMillan’s Writing Lab, together with making guest appearances on Newsnight Special, The Culture Show and Have I Got News For You?
Sharp Stories fuses Ian McMillan’s “speak-songs” with world music compositions by Szapora multi-instrumentalist Luke Carver Goss. Backed by a five piece orchestra of fiddles, accordions, whistles and hurdy-gurdy, Ian speaks on such diverse subjects as a Russian heatwave, his dad, and a list of nicknames that is also an elegy for Yorkshire industry.
The crispness and clarity of McMillan’s Barnsley accent give Goss a rhythmic springboard for tunes that range from the stirring to the unashamedly sentimental, as in the Ronnie Barker tribute, It’s Goodnight From Him, a fond memoir of family telly-watching.
Tickets for this original evening of entertainment are £12.00, with concession price of £9.50 and £6.50 for students and are available now from the Muni Box Office on 01443 485934.
