Rhondda Cynon Taf Councillors Campaign Against Tonteg Bail Hostel
February 14, 2008
Rhondda Cynon Taf Councillors are to lead a fight against a private company’s decision to use a property in Tonteg for use as bail accommodation.
ClearSprings has leased property without either consulting the local community, South Wales Police or Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council.
County Borough Councillor for Tonteg, Cllr John David said: “This company clearly has no consideration for the local community nor any understanding of the area.
“The property leased by ClearSprings are less than 400 yards away from a local school.
“Under no circumstance can the local community accept this and I urge all local residents in Tonteg to join with me in fighting this ludicrous decision.
“They are instructed by the Home Office to undertake meaningful consultation, but have leased the property without anyone’s knowledge.
“Together with Cllr Ray Butler I will be organising an urgent public meeting and I urge all residents to attend and join with me in expressing our dismay and total opposition to this hostel.”
Council Leader, County Borough Councillor Russell Roberts said: “I will be writing to ClearSprings to place on record our total objection to them placing bail accommodation at Beamumaris Avenue, Tonteg.
“I will also be outlining my grave concerns in relation to ClearSprings’ non existent consultation process and will write to the Home Office to request their intervention.
“I urge everyone in the local community to join their local Councillors in fighting this decision.”
ClearSprings Ltd have purchased the properties at Beaumaris Avenue, Tonteg for use as bail accommodation.
