Trehafod Bridge Closure
April 9, 2008
Major strengthening and refurbishment works are being carried out on Lower Eirw Bridge in Trehafod over the next 30 weeks.
Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council will be forced to close the bridge during this period because of its extremely poor condition. The steelwork has high areas of corrosion, plate lamination and section reduction. The parapets as well as the bridge deck are also in poor condition.
Contractor for the scheme Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd will begin work this week. In order to protect the workforce as well as members of the public during he works, a temporary closure of the bridge has been made.
But following discussions with the bus company Stagecoach, a revised timetable will be introduced that will allow both the north and south sides of Trehafod to be serviced by separate buses twice an hour in both directions.
In the case of the south side, the Gilfach Goch – Porth – Pontypridd service (no. 150) will divert into Trehafod and operate up to the bridge. With regards to the north side, the Blaenrhondda – Porth – Pontypridd service (no 130) will divert and operate as far as the Rhondda Heritage Park and then turn around within coach and car park of the site.
Also to mitigate inconvenience to local residents, a temporary footbridge will be installed along the upstream side of the existing bridge.
Group Director of Environmental Services George Jones explained: “Clearly the strengthening and refurbishment works on Lower Eirw Bridge in Trehafod are essential to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists who use it on a regular basis.
“In order to minimise the amount of disruption caused during the period of closure we have endeavored to introduce a suitable bus timetable that will suit users in the best way possible. We hope this will assist members of the public as much as possible during the essential works being undertaken.”
