Rhondda Cynon Taff Mountain Road Closures

Monday 5th January 2008 – Severe weather warnings have led to a decision by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council to close the Bwlch, Maerdy and Rhigos mountain roads this evening.
The decision was made following the latest weather reports that in order to protect residents and motorists becomes the Council has no choice but to close the roads in the interests of safety.
The roads will close at 10pm this evening and will only reopen the following a thorough inspection has determined that it is safe to do so, motorists who use them to get to and from work are urged to find alternative routes.
The inspection of the roads and decision to close them forms part of the ongoing response to the inclement weather warnings by staff from across Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.
Highways staff, who expect to work around the clock in the coming days as a result of the predicted weather conditions, will continue their ongoing programme of inspection and gritting on the county’s main roads and identified “hot spots”.
Support staff continue to work with schools, community centres, day centres and residential homes that are operated by the authority to ensure plans are in place.
And Emergency Planning officers remain on standby to work with partner agencies such as the Police, Fire Service and others should the need arise.
