An opportunity to create a truly sustainable future for Wales

This year Wales have a great opportunity to develop a truly sustainable future according to the Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, Jane Davidson.

Announcing the publication of the Welsh Assembly Government’s sixth annual Sustainable Development Report, Mrs Davidson said progress was being made but they must now grasp the opportunity to go further.

The report highlights progress made in a number of areas set out in the sustainable development action plan:

  • The Assembly Government is showing how we can live differently in our buildings, with 80% of the energy in the Assembly’s core administrative estate now coming from renewable sources. The 57 largest NHS sites in Wales are using zero carbon rated green tariffs to supply their grid electricity.
  • In demonstrating leadership and delivery at a local level, practical guidance has been published on delivering sustainable development within Local Authorities. Internationally, the ‘Wales for Africa’ Framework is contributing towards international development and addressing emergencies, whilst Wales is seeking to become the worlds first Fair Trade Nation.
  • Work to promote sustainable procurement through Value Wales is gaining momentum and showing tangible benefits, for example the amount of Welsh food purchased by the public sector in Wales has increased from 18% to 24% since 2003 supporting local producers and suppliers, reducing food miles and carbon emissions.
